John Bigelow was born in Malden-on-Hudson, New York. He was admitted to the bar in 1838. From 1849 to 1861, he was one of the editors and co-owners of the New York Evening Post. He was active in the Republican Party and in 1860, President Abraham Lincoln appointed him American Consul in Paris in 1861 and later served as American ambassador to France. Rear Admiral Chadwick served on various naval vessels, taught at the Naval Academy, and served as naval attache of the American legation in London, and as Chief of the Naval Intelligence Service and of the Naval Bureau of Equipment. Spanish Admiral Pascual Cervera y Topete was born in 1839 and died in 1909. He commanded the Atlantic Fleet during the Spanish-American War which was blockaded by the U.S. in Santiago.
